Introduction to Beekeeping Course 2020

This course will be held over 3 Wednesdays
Wednesday 18th and 25th March and 1st April 2020.
7.00pm – 9:00pm each night.

Option A €110: Attend Introductory Course lectures, Apiary demonstrations, monthly lectures, membership of the Federation of Irish Beekeepers and East Waterford Beekeepers’ Association, Monthly beekeepers magazine and beekeeping insurance for 2020

Course Content Synopsis:
Bees in Ireland
Importance of Bees
The Honey Bee Colony, Lifecycle, Occupants of the Hive, Roles within the hive, What bees collect and why.
Siting an Apiary
The Hive parts, How many hives do you want/need,
What equipment  you need,  Protective Clothing
The Beekeepers year, Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer,
How to open a hive of bees
Inspecting and Treating bees, Record Keeping
 How bees produce honey, Honey types, and harvesting honey
Other products from the Hive
Pests and Diseases
Honey Comb and learning to read the comb.
Handouts of lecture notes are included in the Course Fee.

Those wanting to participate in Apiary Demonstrations will learn the practical parts of Beekeeping..opening a hive, looking for the Q, identifying the occupants of the hive, learning how to carry out inspections, spotting disease, using the smoker, and much much more.

We recommend reading The Bee Manual by Claire and Adrian Waring in preparation for the course.

East Waterford Beekeepers’Association is hosting a public lecture with Dr Una Fitzpatrick on Wednesday 12th February at 7 pm in the Dunhill Education Centre, Dunhill Ecopark, Co Waterford.

The Lecture title is: All-Ireland Pollinator Plan 2015-2020: Lessons learned and looking to the future.

Lecturer: Dr Una Fitzpatrick, BioDiversity Centre, Waterford

Una will also be discussing how beekeepers can contribute to the plan.
Úna has a Ph.D. in botany. She worked on a project on the conservation of Irish bees before joining the National Biodiversity Data Centre in 2007. She is responsible for the plant, vegetation and pollinator work programmes of the Centre.  She is the chair of the steering group that produced the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan 2015-2020 and oversees its implementation.
This is a public lecture. There is no charge.

From M9 Waterford/Dublin Motorway (Alternate route via toll bridge)
Continue from M9 following signs for Cork via toll bridge (car charge €1.90) – Take the next exit after the toll bridge, signposted Waterford IT, Waterford Crystal, Tramore.  Follow the road going straight through the roundabouts until you come to the Butlerstown Roundabout  – Take the third exit, signposted N25/Cork and follow this road past Whitfield Clinic until you see signs for Tramore Seaside Resort and Copper Coast Geopark on your left and on the junction a sign for Dunhill Education & Enterprise Park. Take the left turn on this crossroads. Continue straight out for 2.8 miles where you will meet a small crossroads with Dunhill Education & Enterprise Park signposted, take the right-hand turn. Continue on this road for 3 miles where you will meet Pairc Ui Bhain(Dunhill GAA Park) on your left and Dunhill Ecopark on your right. Enter the Ecopark. Continue down past the first building. Turn right and park along the front of the second building. Dunhill Rural Enterprises and Dunhill Multi-Education Centre are in through the small conservatory on the left-hand side of the building and up the stairs. There is also parking at the rear of the building.

Wednesday 8th January 2020

Our first lecture for 2020 is on Wednesday 8th January at 7pm in  Dunhill Rural Enterprise Park, Dunhill Ecopark, Dunhill, Co. Waterford.
This is the new venue for our lectures going forward.
The most direct access is to come via the Tramore Road passing Orchardstown Garden Centre. Follow the signs for Dunhill and the park is on your right opposite the GAA grounds.
Our lecture will be given by Irene Power.
Irene is a very experienced lecturer and has lectured in many counties and countries on various beekeeping topics and comes from a family steeped in beekeeping.
The topic is:
 Spring Management and building up stocks on Oil Seed Rape.
